2017 Your Voice, Your Choice: Parks and Streets Vote Results in District 5
DISTRICT 5
- Lake City: Crossing Improvements on 35th Ave NE & NE 130th St (Cost: $75,000, Total Votes: 686)
- Meadowbrook: Traffic Calming along Ravenna Ave NE near NE 98th St (Cost: $88,200, Total Votes: 633)
- Pinehurst: Crossing Improvements near Hazel Wolf School (Cost: $90,000, Total Votes: 630)
- Broadview: Walkway Improvements near Broadview-Thomson K-8 (Cost: $90,000, Total Votes: 584)
As a bonus, while Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) reviewed ideas submitted by Your Voice, Your Choice participants, it ran the projects through its program priorities and was able to fund additional traffic calming and pedestrian improvement projects in underserved neighborhoods throughout the City. SDOT will work with communities to announce, design, and implement these projects in the upcoming year.
To provide some context to the results above, with $2 million to spend on park and street improvements, we allotted a maximum of $285,000 per City Council District. After the top projects in each district were selected by voters, there was $233,019 remaining in the budget. These dollars were used to fund one additional project in the three districts with the highest voter participation (Districts 1, 2, and 5).
You will also note that the number of funded projects varies per district. This is because the fund allotment is based strictly on overall cost and not the number of projects. The funding for these projects will be included as part of the Mayor’s 2018 Proposed Budget, and the work will begin in 2018.
This is the second year we have asked residents to weigh in on how to spend a portion of the City’s budget. Last year the focus was on youth, and this year anyone over the age of 11 could participate. We are blown away by the response with 7,737 community members voting for projects in their neighborhoods! We are so grateful to everyone who participated.

Viewlands Trail Improvement
Beginning next week the Seattle Parks Department will construct a new segment of trail at the lower end of the Viewlands Trail, to bypass a failing trail route.
You can see the notice of the work and the route at the Parks Dept. link.
This work will result in a safer and more durable trail for users.
Vote in the Primary Election by August 1
The primary election on August 1 has several significant offices to vote on — Seattle Mayor, two at-large City Council Districts, Port Commissioners, and others. There is also a King County levy proposal.
Mailed in ballots must be post marked August 1 to be counted. Ballot drop off boxes are open until 8 PM. There is one at the Broadview Library.

Practice for a Disaster at Broadview Hub July 29th

P-patches Are Now Emergency Meeting Places
The Seattle Office of Emergency Management has coordinated with the Department of Neighborhoods to make P-patches ready to become neighborhood meeting places in the event of a major emergency. The article at this site describes the program. The Bitter Lake P-patch is one of those included.
Meanwhile, our Broadview Prepares Emergency Hub locations continue. More information about such neighborhood hubs is available at Seattle Emergency Hubs.
The hub at Luther Memorial Church will participate in the city wide hub drill on July 29. More information about the drill and the participation of local hub volunteers will be available soon.
Hold a Night Out Block Party August 1st
Each year on the first Tuesday in August neighbors on a block participate in Seattle Night Out by holding a block outdoor event.
The event is part of the Block Watch program, and helps neighbors get to know each other. Night Out is a national event promoted in Seattle by Seattle Police Department (SPD) Crime Prevention. It is designed to heighten crime prevention awareness, increase neighborhood support in anti-crime efforts, and unite our communities.

Debora Juarez to Speak at Next Broadview – Bitter Lake Community Council Meeting
The Broadview – Bitter Lake Community Council has announced the speaker and topics at its next meeting. Below is the announcement.
At the next Broadview Bitter Lake Community Council Meeting on Tuesday June 20th Debora Juarez, District Five Seattle City Council Member, will speak on a variety of topics that affect our neighborhood…. such as an update on the lid/park over the reservoir… is the 130th street new Seattle Police Department North Precinct happening? what to do about the homeless in our area, the new city Income tax proposal and updates on Affordable Housing.
There will also be updates from Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) on Greenwood projects coming up over the summer as well as how to vote for Your Voice, Your Choice projects in our area.
The meetings are held at the Luther Memorial Church at 132nd and Greenwood. 13047 Greenwood Ave N, Seattle, WA 98133
The doors open at 6:30 for sign in and social time. The meeting will start at 7pm and go to 8:30pm.

At last! Time to Vote on Your Voice, Your Choice
Seattle Dept of Neighborhoods- Your Voice, Your Choice: Parks & Streets is a participatory budgeting initiative in which Seattle residents democratically decide how to spend a portion of the City’s budget on small-scale park and street improvements. A total of $285,000 is set aside in each City Council District, and residents can cast their ballots for their top three choices in the district where they live, work, go to school, receive services, or volunteer. VOTE NOW!

5C. BROADVIEW: Walkway Improvements near Viewlands Elementary- Complete 60% of design for walkway improvements on 3rd Ave NW between NW 105th St & NW 107th St to allow pedestrians to walk near Viewlands Elementary and a bus stop.
5G. BROADVIEW: Walkway Improvements near Broadview-Thomson K-8-Improve walkways, including low-cost curbing, along 132nd Street between Greenwood Ave NW & 3rd Ave NW near Broadview-Thomson K-8 SDOT.
5J. BITTER LAKE: Traffic-calming on N. 143rd St, between Greenwood and Linden Ave-Restrict turning from Linden Ave N onto N 143rd St (potential partial closure), install speed humps, and add speed signs to reduce speeds and cut-through traffic.
