At last! Time to Vote on Your Voice, Your Choice

Seattle Dept of Neighborhoods- Your Voice, Your Choice: Parks & Streets is a participatory budgeting initiative in which Seattle residents democratically decide how to spend a portion of the City’s budget on small-scale park and street improvements. A total of $285,000 is set aside in each City Council District, and residents can cast their ballots for their top three choices in the district where they live, work, go to school, receive services, or volunteer. VOTE NOW!

Three of these are in our neighborhood:

5C. BROADVIEW: Walkway Improvements near Viewlands Elementary- Complete 60% of design for walkway improvements on 3rd Ave NW between NW 105th St & NW 107th St to allow pedestrians to walk near Viewlands Elementary and a bus stop.

5G. BROADVIEW: Walkway Improvements near Broadview-Thomson K-8-Improve walkways, including low-cost curbing, along 132nd Street between Greenwood Ave NW & 3rd Ave NW near Broadview-Thomson K-8 SDOT.

5J. BITTER LAKE: Traffic-calming on N. 143rd St, between Greenwood and Linden Ave-Restrict turning from Linden Ave N onto N 143rd St (potential partial closure), install speed humps, and add speed signs to reduce speeds and cut-through traffic.

Micro-Community Policing Plan coming up in July

Bitter Lake is: Wednesday, July 12th 6:15pm-7:15pm at the Broadview Public Library Branch

As an ongoing research project, I will be conducting focus groups again this year! The focus groups are part of Seattle University’s evaluation of the Micro-Community Policing Plan. I am interested in talking to all the micro-communities in the North Precinct area about knowledge of the Micro-Community Policing Plan, interactions with the Seattle Police Department, crime and safety concerns and suggested improvements for each of your unique neighborhoods! The focus groups are semi-structured and typically last one hour.

Join in and get to know your neighborhood police officers.

Viewlands Trail Repair wins Grant

Good news for the users of Carkeek Park — a grant to rebuild and reroute part of the trail from Viewlands School has been approved. Mudslides at the bottom of the trail have damaged the access and threaten to close the trail the next time a mudslide occurs.

Members of the community voted on three options for using the grant, and the Viewlands Trail option won. Thanks to all you who helped make this possible.

A time frame for doing the work has not yet been established.

Pedestrian Safety Improvements: Greenwood Ave N from N 137th St to N 145th St

The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) is planning to construct pedestrian safety improvements on Greenwood Ave N, beginning this year. These improvements will help achieve Seattle’s Vision Zero goal to end all traffic deaths and serious injuries by 2030.

Project overview:

The first phase of the project will construct a new sidewalk, planting strip, curb and gutter along the east side of Greenwood Ave N, between N 145th St and N 137th St, as well as a new pedestrian activated signal at N 137th St.

Other improvements will include Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant curb ramps at each intersection in the project area and pedestrian signal improvements at N 143rd and N 145th streets.

The second phase of the project will construct a new sidewalk, planting strip, curb and gutter along the west side of Greenwood Ave N, between N 145th St and N 137th St. This phase of the project will also include repaving work to improve the roadway surface of this section of Greenwood Ave N.

Schedule: Final design is now complete for safety improvements on the east side of Greenwood Ave N. Construction is expected to begin this Fall. Preliminary design is currently underway for west side improvements and roadway surface repaving.

Funding: This project is funded by SDOT’s Safe Routes to School Program, Sidewalk Development Program and the Move Seattle Levy, which was approved by voters in 2015.

SPU Broadview Program Update

For the Broadview Program, SPU continues to work on multiple program and project needs:

SPU is completing the NW 120^th Outfall project improvements, and the 11^th Avenue NW Drainage improvements, both due to be substantially complete this spring.
SPU staff are still in the process of completing the design amendment for our technical consultant contract for future work elements, and,
The next Broadview project, the 12^th Avenue Northwest Drainage Improvement is scheduled to be next out of the gate. SPU staff expects to finalize the 12^th Avenue NW Drainage project’s business case within a couple months. This step enables the project to gain executive leadership and project approval to move into design. If all goes well, we hope to have design information to share with the community in early summer.

Once 12^th has been approved to move into design, we will concentrate our efforts on procuring the necessary technical contracts for the Dayton Sewer Improvement Project, and completing its business case, which we are coordinating with SDOT for their Move Seattle elements. We anticipate that Dayton will be approved to move into design this fall and we will begin formally reaching out to the community then. Our community outreach representative on both projects will continue to be Katie McVicker.

Spring is here and summer is around the corner. It’s hard to believe with our weather.

2017 Summer Employment Guide is here! Great time for kids to earn some extra money- jobs go quickly.

Seattle Parks and Recreation, in partnership with the Associated Recreation Council (ARC) and 37 citywide advisory councils, is now accepting applications for various summer programs. Temporary positions are available at 24 community centers, eight indoor swimming pools, two outdoor pools, two small craft centers, and many public beaches and wading pools.

As our days get longer and warmer, think about volunteering in our neighborhood park, Carkeek!

Weekday Workers (WeWos) are forest stewards that focus on special planting and plant care projects with the help of volunteers who are available during the week. The work varies as needs arise in Carkeek Park. Typical activities are planting, invasive species removal and clearing blocked trails. Location of work within the park and type of work varies from week to week.

Carkeek Park Demonstration Gardens meet most Tuesdays, 9 am to Noon. The volunteer gardeners will be in the garden to answer questions about the gardens and successful, low-impact gardening. If you would like to volunteer in the gardens, please contact one of the gardeners listed below before showing up to volunteer. Volunteers should wear gardening clothes; we have spades, shovels, and rakes, but bring your favorite small tool

To bring some clarity and discussion to the fore, the Broadview-Bitter Lake Community Council is planning a panel discussion about taxes in Seattle for our next member meeting. All are welcome. Jayapal Announces Four District Town Halls in April

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal will hold four town halls in April throughout Washington’s 7th District. The first will be a senior-focused event for residents of Horizon House in Seattle. The following three will take place on Vashon Island, Shoreline, and Burien, respectively.

These four meetings are a continuation of a series of town halls that began in March and will extend throughout the year. At the events, Jayapal will discuss her work in Congress and take questions from constituents. Town halls are an important way for constituents to connect with their representatives in government and hold them accountable.
