Arts Integration at Christ the King Catholic School

Recently two articles from the Seattle Times on April 7, 2013 have highlighted the integration  of the arts – music and art throughout the curriculum of an elementary school.  For years researchers have known that math, science, and technology instruction is enhanced by a strong integration of music and art in the curriculum.  Christ the King, located in the heart of Broadview, offers a strong art and music program as well as a solid core academic curriculum in math, science, and English/language arts.  CKS has dedicated art and music teachers who instruct Preschool through 8th Grade.  Classroom teachers work with music, art, and technology to integrate these subjects throughout the students learning day.  CKS has limited enrollment opportunities for the 2013-2014 school year.  For more information contact Christ the King at www.ckseattle.org.

Native Plants, Natural Pruning & A Neighborhood Gem – Resources for Broadview Gardeners

Did you know that the Washington Native Plant Society conducts guided tours of native plants in Carkeek Park?  That they offer monthly presentations, and plant sales? That you can learn about gardening with natives that offer low maintenance, drought tolerance, and food for birds and wildlife?

Did you know that there’s an organization in north Seattle dedicated to teaching proper pruning and maintenance of trees and shrubs (Plant Amnesty), and that they offer workshops and other resources for pruning and landscape renovation?

And did you know that there’s a hidden gem of an historic garden in our very own neighborhood?  That it was designed in 1916 by the renowned landscape architects the Olmsted Brothers, and that you can tour Dunn Gardens between April and October each year?

The Broadview Garden Club invites you to kick off the gardening season with a presentation from leaders in each of these three organizations, who will show and tell about the diverse resources they offer.  Come get your questions answered….and take home terrific handouts that tell you more!

Midwinter can be quiet, except for the colored twigs of willows and dogwoods, but late winter and early spring can burst forth with an abundance of hellebore blooms.  They can be winter’s most captivating plant.  It is so fun to walk out into your sleepy garden and see a fountain of blooms on your hellebore plants.  Sometimes you have to look for the blooms, since some of them nod their little heads towards the ground and get lost in the foliage.

We are lucky in the Northwest that the hellebore plants grow so well.  The are descended from the limy conditions in Greece, Turkey and Caucasus, but they like our NW acidic soil.  You should work plenty of humus and mulch in before you plant to help make them thrive.  They like wood chips and will adapted to a variety of light conditions.  They are undemanding and give you that little bit of hope that spring is on its way.

Swanson’s Nursery is a wonderful place to learn more about the varieties of Hellebore plants that do well in the Northwest.  It is also good to just go there at this time of year and learn what flowers are blooming in late February and early March.  That will help you to decide what you could plant this year, that will give you the gift of a flower in early spring.

Coming in March will be our wonderful joint meeting with Broadview Community Council and Broadview Garden Club.
