Support our Neighborhood and Meet Mayor Ed Murray

Find It Fix It Community Walk poster.pdf logoTime: November 14th at 11:00AM -1:00 PM

Meeting Place:  Bitter Lake Community Center

Mayor Ed Murray will lead a Find It, Fix It Community Walk in the Bitter Lake neighborhood. During this walk, neighbors, police, and City officials will come together to identify nuisance and safety issues (e.g., overgrown trees, graffiti, and litter). There will also be a chance to volunteer with community groups working on revitalization projects funded by the City of Seattle and Cities of Service.

A little history on Find it and Fix it.

In 2014, Mayor Ed Murray initiated Find It, Fix It Community Walks, a series of Mayor-led walks that help improve neighborhoods one block at a time. During these walks, neighbors, police, and City officials walk together to identify physical elements in the neighborhood that make it feel unsafe or poorly maintained. Examples include overgrown trees, graffiti, street light outages, and litter. Once the elements are identified, the City and community work together to fix the problems.
Also our City has a  Mobile App for Find it and Fix it. For more information go to: http://www.seattle.gov/customer-service-bureau/find-it-fix-it-mobile-app

Remember to Vote Nov. 3!

If you haven’t mailed in your ballot for the Nov. 3 election there is still time to do so.  As long as your ballot is post marked on Nov. 3 it will be counted.  An alternative to sending the ballot by mail is to take it to a ballot drop box.  There is one at the Ballard branch of the Seattle Public Library , and other locations listed at the link above.

This year we have the opportunity to vote for our own District 5 Seattle City Council member.  Plus there are other City and County and State offices and initiatives on the ballot.

Sandbags Available from Seattle Public Utilities

With potential heavy rainfall in the forecast the announcement below from Seattle Public Utilities may be of interest to some in our community who have experienced surface water runoff flooding in the past.

Storm season is underway and Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is offering a limited number of free, filled sandbags to households or business owners in flood-prone areas. If you’ve experienced, or come close to, flooding, you may consider using sandbags.

Take the Pedestrian Master Plan Update survey!

Broadview has had some new sidewalks installed in the past ten years, but many more are needed.

The Pedestrian Master Plan seeks to funnel pedestrian improvements to areas of the city with the greatest need. It prioritizes where to provide new sidewalks, curb ramps, crosswalks, and many other improvements that make it easier to walk in our neighborhoods.

To inform the Plan update, we need your input on the types of pedestrian improvements you think are most important, and where you think we should build them. We will use your feedback to help identify the highest priority areas to focus improvements.

You can access the Pedestrian Master Plan Update public survey on SDOT’s home page, or directly on the project website here: http://www.seattle.gov/transportation/pedMasterPlan.htm. It will be open through  the end of November.

Seattle Police Department Crime Data Dashboard

The Seattle Police Department has  launched its Crime Data Dashboard, giving Seattle residents access to the same statistical information on incidents of property and violent crime used by SPD commanders, officers and analysts to direct police patrols.

“This tool provides Seattle residents with unprecedented transparency and accessibility to accurate and timely crime data,” said Mayor Ed Murray. “With this data at their fingertips, the community and Seattle police can build stronger partnerships to address and prevent crime.”

MobileThe Department developed the Crime Data Dashboard, which is the public-facing version of the dashboard that drives the SeaStat process, as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance public trust through transparency and to continue its push to effectively address crime and disorder in the City through its data-driven and community policing approach.

Dashboard users will now be able to view and sort historic and current data on crime across the city, in precincts, and in each Micro Community. Data on the dashboard is refreshed on a monthly basis and will account for any ongoing changes in the status of an investigation. Additionally, all of the data released through the dashboard is open-source and downloadable for further analysis.
A video demonstration of the dashboard is available here:  https://youtu.be/yeqL6U1MN5M

145th Street Multimodal Corridor Study

The second open house for the 145th Street Multimodal Corridor Study was held on Wednesday, September 30.  Approximately 200 people attended.  At this open house, City of Shoreline staff shared general information about the study and the project team introduced draft study concepts.  Open house attendees participated in an exercise which will be used to help inform the outcome. The eventual goal of this study will be to recommend a preferred study concept to Shoreline council and stakeholders.

Viewlands Playground Donor Drive+Legacy Campaign

play ground

I have great big news to share!!!  We were awarded two large grants to build Viewlands Elementary Phase I playground improvements, thanks to your interest in the project and the many support pledges made Spring 2015!  It amounted to over 500 hours pledged of volunteer labor toward Phase I construction and over $7,000+ in cash pledge donations, to tangibly show the Department of Neighborhoods, the level of support we have from our Viewlands community, neighbors, families and friends, last Spring!!!

We were notified last week of grant awards, King County Grant on Oct. 1st and The City of Seattle Grant on Oct. 6th!!!  This is huge for Viewlands!!!  I can’t thank you enough!  It’s beautiful to see how everyone’s individual support, shows something truly great is happening around this project for Viewlands!!!  I sincerely thank you!!!!

The next big hurdle is securing all pledged contributions in the coming weeks, to secure matching funds now required in the next month, to proceed with grant awards!

Please join VEPTSA Legacy Campaign Direct Ask Fundraiser, in the coming 21 days!!!

This combined effort of fundraising began by Viewlands students in September… gathering up their “change” to change the playground, which totaled $848.52!!!  We are on our way to our goal!!!

VEPTSA, will also be in the Viewlands courtyard, Nov. 3rd and 4th, 9:10-9:30am and 3:30-3:50pm, collecting all “checks to change the playground” if you prefer to hand your check to a VEPTSA directly!!! or option to make a tax-deductible contribution by credit card!!!

Also you can donate online!  gofundme.com/xj6hyaw7
