Report on SPU Natural Drainage Walking Tours

Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) has the report below about the walking tours in Broadview last week.

Dear Broadview Neighbor,

Thank you to everyone who joined one of our walking tours on Saturday, Nov. 3! We are grateful so many of you joined us in the wind and rain to share your thoughts about natural drainage systems (NDS)! Overall, about 50 people stopped by to talk with us.

We shared two preliminary NDS concepts with the community and a map of all the possible feasible locations for NDS. Over the next few months, we will start to identify which concept may apply to which block, and where the NDS systems will go. We’ll be considering the feedback we received from specific property owners, the location of above-ground and underground utilities, the location of mature trees, technical feasibility, soil conditions and other factors. We hope to share more details in the first quarter of 2019.

Here are some key themes that we heard on Saturday:

    • Strong support for natural drainage systems (NDS)
    • Desire to maintaining as much parking as possible, particularly near property owners’ homes
    • Need to address pedestrian and bicycle safety through NDS design
    • Interest in understanding impacts and timing of construction
    • Request to reduce impervious surfaces wherever possible
    • Desire for sidewalks (Note: The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) decides when and where to put in sidewalks. If you want more information about their Sidewalk Program, please email walkandbike@seattle.gov or call 206-684-7583. If you’re interested in petitioning the City to put in sidewalks in your neighborhood, one of the most direct ways is to apply for Your Voice, Your Choice funding. Learn more here.)

If you or a neighbor were not able to attend the event, we welcome your feedback or questions about the proposed concepts or project via email (spu_broadviewprojects@seattle.gov) or phone (206) 409-3651. You can review the materials that were presented at the event on our website under the Project Documents tab.

12th Avenue Northwest Basin Drainage project
As a reminder, you’re invited to a neighborhood walking tour to discuss possible locations for natural drainage systems installation on Saturday, Nov. 3. We’ll be on site rain or shine hosting three tours focused on different blocks. See event invite for tour times, location information and other details.

Dayton Avenue North Sewer Improvement project
In the 2019-2020 budget proposal, all City departments were required by the mayor’s office to reduce budgets by 5% while striving to maintain current service levels. SPU analyzed all of its projects citywide and reprioritized them based on need, efficiency, operating budgets, logistics and the obligation to deliver on our regulatory requirements. As a result of this reprioritization effort, the Dayton Avenue North Sewer Improvement project is not included in the current budget and has been postponed for at least two years.  Comprehensive utility planning will inform when future work in the Dayton basin occurs.

SPU continues to monitor the Dayton basin for wastewater and drainage problems, and we encourage any resident who experiences back-ups or drainage issues to report them to our Operations Response Center by calling 206-386-1800.

Citywide Drainage and Wastewater Planning
SPU is also comprehensively examining how our drainage and wastewater systems work citywide as part of the Drainage and Wastewater System Analyses. These technical analysis efforts use modeling and flow monitors to understand system capacity and problems, so we can plan and prioritize future projects and improvements better. Results of this study will better inform future capital work throughout the entire city.

Sewer Mainline Improvements
Sewer mainline improvements throughout the Broadview area include pipeline repairs, pipe-lining and other system improvements to help prevent sewer overflows and restore pipeline system integrity.  This year we’re lining more than 10,000 feet of sewer pipe in Broadview. First Avenue Northwest was lined from approximately 105th Street Northwest to 112th Street Northwest in addition to work that occurred on other streets.  This proactive work reduces the need for costly reactive repairs in the future and helps ensure reliable sewer service in the neighborhood.

What do Light rail, Amazon and Airbnb have in common?

The answer is the holidays and they are right around the corner.  Here are some simple tips to make your lives easier over the holidays.

Transportation– Avoid all the bumper to bumper traffic to the airport and back by suggesting to your guests to take the light rail from the airport to Downtown. Meet them Downtown and get some shopping done at the same time. Light rail runs often. Light rail link

Shopping -A lot of us shop Amazon for some of our gifts and we know there are a lot of thieves in our hood, especially around the holidays. You can choose on the Amazon site to have your packages delivered directly to the Amazon store in our neighborhood.  Easy pick-up and returns. Convenient location with parking. It’s free. Broadview Amazon Store link

Guest that are planning on staying for a few days– Where to put your guest? Many of you might not know about Airbnb. It’s the hottest trending site for people who travel. It offers unique affordable places to stay around the world and there are many places right here in Broadview. Broadview Airbnb link  Look for a 5-star superhost rating. These are the best and here is an Example of one, Peaceful Urban Retreat link (Disclosure this one is mine, easier for me to do the link.)

Remember after the holidays if you are planning a vacation to a sunny location the first of the year, SR 99 will be closed for three weeks from Battery to Spokane St. This will be pure hell getting to the airport. As of today the set date for closure is January 11, 2019. WSDOT site for updates on changes

Enjoy the upcoming Holidays.

Final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) on ADUs in Seattle

This examines potential environmental impacts of proposed changes to the City’s Land Use Code related to accessory dwelling units (ADUs)* in single-family zones. The Final EIS includes a Preferred Alternative for Land Use Code changes that address regulations and policies frequently cited as barriers to the creation of ADUs.

ADU_FEIS_onepager

Publishing this Final EIS completes the environmental review process for this proposal. In 2019, after considering the EIS alternatives and holding a public hearing, the City Council will consider whether to adopt changes to the Land Use Code related to ADUs. For more information, visit our project website or email ADUEIS@seattle.gov. Website: seattle.gov/council/ADU-EIS
